Institute of Quarrying is proud to announce the return of the Emerald Challenge

Recognizing the critical role of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) is proud to announce the return of the Emerald Challenge, a grant scheme designed to support professionals across the sector in developing practical, high-impact sustainability solutions.

As the impacts of climate change accelerate, sustainability has emerged as one of the most urgent challenges of our time. From rising global temperatures to biodiversity loss and extreme weather events, the consequences of inaction are becoming increasingly apparent. Central to global efforts to tackle these challenges is the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, a commitment to drastically reduce greenhouse gases and balance any remaining emissions through offsetting or removal. Achieving this target is vital not only to limit global warming, but also to protect the planet’s resources for future generations.

Leading the way

Reaching net-zero demands a fundamental transformation in how industries operate, particularly those with significant environmental footprints. The mineral products industry, responsible for around 30% of the UK’s total freight traffic by weight, is integral to construction, infrastructure, and the built environment[1]. While essential for supplying the raw materials that underpin modern society, the industry’s energy-intensive processes contribute considerably to carbon emissions. This presents both a challenge and a unique opportunity.

Producing over 419 million tonnes of materials annually, more than one million tonnes each day, the mineral products industry is fundamental to the nation’s construction and development needs[2]. Yet, as climate concerns intensify, it is crucial that the industry leads with solutions that reduce environmental impact and foster long-term sustainability.

James Thorne, IQ chief executive officer, emphasises: ‘Sustainability and decarbonization are at the heart of industry transformation. The climate emergency requires us to rethink how we consume energy and materials, embrace circular economy principles, and enhance biodiversity. The mineral products industry plays a vital role in ensuring the UK meets its Net Zero Carbon target by 2050, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.’

By embracing innovation across every stage, from extraction and processing to logistics and land restoration, the sector can lead efforts in reducing carbon footprints and boosting resource efficiency. Adopting new technologies, enhancing energy efficiency, and embedding sustainable practices like circular economy principles and habitat restoration will not only mitigate environmental impact, but also position the industry as a leader in the global transition to a low-carbon future.

The Emerald Challenge award

Supporting industry innovators

The Emerald Challenge acts as a catalyst, encouraging individuals and organizations to pioneer advancements in resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.

Offering a £5,000 grant to the successful applicant, the scheme empowers individuals to transform bold ideas into real-world innovations that help steer the industry towards net-zero carbon.

Open to IQ Technical Members (TMIQ), Members (MIQ), and Fellows (FIQ), the Emerald Challenge funds projects and research that align with organizational environmental strategies and broader industry sustainability objectives.

Steve Cole Hon FIQ is a member of the IQ Council and as founder of The Emerald Challenge is responsible for the original idea and concept. He says: ‘It’s so rewarding to witness the projects flourish after winning The Emerald Challenge. The judging panel saw their potential, but the results are exceeding our expectations. It’s abundantly evident that there’s a collective passion for fostering ideas aimed at safeguarding our environment, aligning perfectly with the UK’s Sustainable Development Goals.’

Submissions are encouraged across key focus areas including decarbonization, energy efficiency, circular economy practices, biodiversity and habitat enhancement, pollution mitigation, and water management. The Challenge nurtures a culture of innovation by backing professionals committed to creating tangible environmental impact.

Celebrating previous success

The Emerald Challenge has supported pioneering projects shaping the future of the mineral products industry:

Andrew Gall, Silt Sump: Focused on pollution control and water management, Andrew developed ‘Silt Sump’, an environmentally friendly, cost-effective filtration system for managing silt during timber haulage road construction. This recyclable solution has attracted interest from civil engineers and ecologists, highlighting its wider impact beyond Scotland.

Andrew reflects: ‘Without the Emerald Challenge, my idea would have remained unrealized. Winning gave me the confidence and momentum to pursue something I am passionate about.’

Oliver Kibble, Tarmac, and Thomas Clifford, GEARS: Their project aimed to reduce CO2 emissions in hard rock quarries through improved blast fragmentation. Using digital monitoring, drone surveys, and AI-driven analysis, they optimized blast designs to minimize emissions, reduce secondary breakage, and enhance operational efficiency. The initiative also provided apprenticeships, supporting skill development across the sector.

Oliver notes: ‘The Emerald Challenge inspired us to present the idea, and winning motivated management to fully back the research.’

How to apply

Applications for the 2025 Emerald Challenge opened from 1 April 2025. The winner will be announced at the prestigious IQ Fellows Lunch in November 2025, providing a platform to showcase their contribution to a more sustainable industry.
