Weir Minerals Africa enjoying further growth in MEA region

Rene Calitz

Company establishes successful business model in the Middle East and African markets

ACCORDING to Weir Minerals Africa, it is not only large blue-chip mining companies that are opting for their premium equipment and technical after-sales support; smaller operations in the Middle East and sub-Saharan African territories are also partnering with them.

These operations, which include aggregate and sand producers, have become a very strategic growth market for the company, according to Rene Calitz, head of strategy and marketing for Weir Minerals Africa, who reports that much of the ongoing success is down to Weir Minerals’ Trio comminution product offering, especially in the quarrying environment.

For example, the company recently won a contract for a new 300 tonnes/h plant in Zambia, followed by its latest comminution project in the Middle East – a 400 tonnes/h crushing and screening operation in Saudi Arabia.

Rene Calitz said the success that Weir Minerals Africa are enjoying in the market can also be attributed to the company’s commitment to lowering the total cost of ownership of its customers’ operations. The OEM achieves this through its extensive research and development programme, which is geared at improving longevity of wear items while constantly improving the overall performance of existing solutions.

Complementing this strategy is the solid footprint that Weir Minerals Africa have developed in the region. The company has facilities in all the major mining centres in sub-Saharan Africa and this network is being used to support those quarries operating in countries across South Africa’s borders where aggregate and sand are in high demand for large infrastructure delivery programmes.

Elsewhere, a new parts inventory warehouse is being built in Dubai to service the buoyant aggregate and sand production industries in the Middle East. These key initiatives are in line with Weir Minerals Africa’s strategy of ensuring a sustainable business model where, just like their large mining customers, quarry operators will be able to benefit from the company’s equipment solutions.
