VUE cement CEMEX contract

CEMEX UK choose VUE vehicle CCTV systems as part of their ‘Cyclist Safety’ strategy

VUE, the Manchester-based vehicle camera firm, have won a contract to supply vehicle CCTV systems to CEMEX UK, as part of the company’s ‘Cyclist Safety’ strategy.

CEMEX operate more than 400 vehicles which transport cement, aggregates and ready-mixed concrete. The company has been playing a leading role in improving safety awareness among cyclists and has made numerous safety improvements to its fleet of vehicles, including additional signage, mirrors and proximity sensors.

The latest phase of the safety strategy involved VUE supplying the VDRHD vehicle CCTV system, which is to be fitted to an initial 18 vehicles based in London.

The cameras are positioned all around the vehicle and feed into a cab monitor, allowing the driver to have full 360° visibility.

In addition, a further two new development vehicles are being fitted to integrate the camera system with other in-cab safety features and develop the specification with VUE for further vehicles.

VUE won the CEMEX contract following a competitive trial lasting three months.

Glen Mullins, director of VUE, said: ‘The safety of cyclists is an industry-wide issue for the commercial vehicle sector, with large goods vehicles (LGVs) responsible for 56% of cyclist fatalities in London alone during 2011.

‘CEMEX are leading the way in improving cyclist safety in their sector and their decision to install vehicle cameras will not only make the roads safer for cyclists, it will also help their drivers enormously, offering them clear vision around their vehicle and eliminating blind spots.’

Furthermore, CEMEX drivers with the new camera system will have added protection in the case of non-fault accidents. Because the camera systems can record and store footage, they will be useful in contesting erroneous insurance claims and proving that LGVs have been driven safely.

Carl Milton, Northern regional logistics manager at CEMEX UK, commented: ‘Following extensive trials and driver feedback, VUE were selected to work with us in furthering our aims of minimizing road risk and being at the forefront of vehicle safety.’
