Volvo paver for Ashmac Construction

Volvo ABG6870 paver

Northampton-based surfacing contractor takes delivery of a ABG6870 following successful trials

ASHMAC Construction Ltd say they selected their new Volvo ABG6870 wheeled paver following a successful demonstration and evaluation of the machine, which came in for close scrutiny by director Greg Emonds and his team.

‘We are very pleased we chose to go with the Volvo paver rather than any other manufacturer,’ said Mr Emonds. ‘Since taking ownership, it has proven over numerous sites that we have made the correct choice.

‘The crew who are with this particular paver love its performance, manoeuvrability and the ease with which they can operate the machine – whether it’s in the daytime or at night using the xenon working lights. This is a key feature for us as a lot of our work is carried out at night due to traffic sensitivity or location.’

Powered by a 122kW Tier III engine, the ABG6870 features continuous independent traction control over all six wheels, a 12-tonne capacity hopper, variable screed width between 2.5m and 5m in standard configuration (up to 9m with optional extensions) and an output potential of up to 700 tonnes/h.

‘The accuracy of the level control, the finish on the new mat and the operation of the extensions are the most important factors for any screed, and the Volvo ABG6870 scores highly in all areas in our opinion,’ said Mr Emonds.

Having experienced several months ‘bedding in’ at Ashmac Construction, the ABG6870 is proving to be a highly reliable and versatile machine, working exclusively on a prestigious joint-venture contract for Hertfordshire Highways which entails road maintenance and renewals across the county.

Apart from the paver itself, an important part of any deal is the after-care and customer service that is provided to run alongside the product, and to this end Ashmac Construction’s machine has been supplied with a Volvo Blue service agreement.

‘Eight months down the line, we cannot fault Volvo in any way since taking ownership,’ said Mr Emonds.
