Institute of Geologists of Ireland and Geoscientists Canada sign Mutual Recognition Agreement

SLR Consulting Ireland technical director Dr Deirdre Lewis (pictured) has recently co-signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between Ireland and Canada, in her role as President of the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI), with her counterpart, Professor Greg Finn (right of photo), outgoing President of Geoscientists Canada.

The accord between the IGI and Geoscientists Canada will facilitate the professional registration of geoscientists in each country, as it allows each country’s professional geoscientist accreditation (‘PGeo’) to be mutually recognized as equivalent to the other.

‘This MRA is an important achievement for the IGI and for geoscience on both sides of the Atlantic,’ said Deirdre Lewis. ‘It will help to facilitate the international mobility of professional geologists, allowing them to be recognized in their host country as ‘competent persons’ for professional reporting purposes to government, statutory agencies and stock exchanges.

‘Certainly for SLR, who have offices in both Ireland and Canada, I can see that this agreement will enable a flow of expertise, allowing clients to benefit from the best advice available, particularly for ‘competent person’ reporting purposes in either jurisdiction.’
