Terex Trucks scoop prestigious Lux Award

Lux Award

Motherwell manufacturing facility picks up Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year award

TEREX Trucks’ collaboration with enModus and Carbon Reduction Technology, to overhaul the lighting at their manufacturing facility in Motherwell, won the Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year category at the recent Lux Awards in London.

The winning project, a recently installed state-of-the-art lighting system, has already saved the company in excess of £80,000 as a result of reduced electricity consumption and costs.

Terex Trucks, who say their strategic goal is to become carbon neutral, had identified that an overhaul of the lighting system was required, not only to achieve energy efficiency, but also to accurately map energy consumption across the site.

As the operational environment at the Motherwell facility meant that many existing lighting control technologies were unsuitable, several alternative projects were evaluated and, after a rigorous selection process, Carbon Reduction Technologies and enModus were appointed to develop a new ‘Smart Connected Lighting’ system utilizing smarthub technology.

The project involved installing super-efficient LED high-bay lighting and a revolutionary Smart Control System. Using the existing wiring infrastructure to create a building-wide communications network, the system delivers intelligent lighting control of individual luminaires and automated emergency light testing. It also allows the company to measure energy savings and see occupancy levels across the entire facility through the enModus Cloud Platform.

Terex Trucks say the system, which uses more than 950 smart lights, has already produced some great results by providing significant improvements in lighting quality, as well as substantial energy savings.

Replacing the original metal-halide lights with Carbon Reduction Technologies’ LED lighting has delivered a measured energy saving of 61%, whilst the enModus Smart Connected Lighting solution has saved a further 60%, resulting in a total energy saving of 84%. In addition, carbon emissions have been reduced by approximately 305,000kg per annum.

So far, the energy efficiency solutions have achieved a reduction of around £84,000 in electricity consumption and costs, but Terex Trucks are now installing Smart Connected Lighting solutions in the warehouse and office buildings at Motherwell, and, as a result, are projecting site-wide energy savings of up to £216,000 per annum.

The Smart Connected Lighting solution was one of five projects shortlisted for the Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year award.

Terex Trucks’ operations director, Paul Hudson, who collected the prestigious award at the Lux Awards presentation on 15 November, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled to win as it was a very strong field with some great competition, but it’s fantastic that the steps we have taken to become carbon neutral have been recognized in this way.

‘We are continuously working with our partners enModus and Carbon Reduction Technology to implement smarthub technology across other processes.’
