Tarmac win prestigious Midlands Highways Contract

TARMAC have secured the sought-after ‘Midlands Framework 4’ (MF4) from the Highways Agency. One of four contractors chosen to deliver the £250 million contract, Tarmac are the only company to have been appointed on all four Midlands Framework agreements.

The MF4 contract, which is aimed at delivering innovation and efficiency savings on highways schemes in the Midlands, will run for one year with an option for a further year’s extension.

It covers the Highways Agency’s Areas 7 and 9, which include the M1 motorway from junction 15 to 30 in the East Midlands, and the M42, M6, and M5 motorways and trunk roads across the West Midlands.

As a principal contractor, Tarmac’s National Contracting division will provide a complete package of in-house services, including surfacing, planing, traffic management, barrier works, street lighting and civils.

The contract will see Tarmac selecting and managing supply chain partners, as well as working together with the other appointed contractors (Aigol, a joint venture between Aggregate Industries and Geoffrey Osbourne; Balfour Beatty; and a Costain and Lafarge joint venture) on schemes valued between £500,000 and £8 million.

Tarmac were awarded the MF4 contract – which was assessed on a 60% quality, 40% price ratio – based on their track record of delivering services under previous Midlands Frameworks 1, 2 and 3, and their successful highways partner relationships in the region.

Paul Fleetham, executive director of Tarmac National Contracting, said the company’s experience of delivering successful schemes on MF3 had played an important part in winning this latest contract.
