Tarmac unveil CEVO solution
Tarmac launch CEVO Asphalts to deliver UK’s 'first’ net-zero road solution
TARMAC have introduced CEVO Asphalts – a new range of engineered solutions designed to deliver net-zero road construction and maintenance. By combining advanced binder technology, circular economy principles, and low-energy manufacturing with wider decarbonization measures, CEVO Asphalts provide the UK’s first practical pathway to net-zero roads without relying on carbon offsetting.
At the core of the approach, Tarmac say CEVO Asphalts reduce carbon emissions from asphalt materials by up to 45%, compared with conventional hot mix asphalts. This is achieved using plant-based bio binders, warm mix production technologies, and higher proportions of recycled asphalt planings (RAP). Together, these measures cut embodied carbon, reduce energy use, and conserve natural resources.
When deployed alongside other decarbonization practices, such as the use of electric vehicles and plants, CEVO Asphalts have already achieved overall project carbon savings of up to 80%. The UK’s lowest-carbon resurfacing trial, carried out on the A64 in North Yorkshire, has demonstrated the practical potential of these solutions.
The initiative is further supported by Tarmac’s PAVE Technology Solutions, which integrate innovations in pavement design, production and laying techniques. These improve efficiency, extend road life and reduce whole-life maintenance requirements, contributing to more sustainable road networks.
‘The construction and maintenance of roads make a significant contribution to the built environment’s carbon footprint,’ remarked Denis O’Callaghan, business performance director at Tarmac.
‘With increasing pressure on local authorities and highways contractors to address this challenge, the demand for credible, low-carbon solutions has never been more urgent. We’re proud to be leading the charge with CEVO Asphalts, which is designed to help clients meet their net-zero goals, without offsetting or compromising performance or durability.’
To help customers measure their impact, Tarmac will also launch a digital carbon calculator, allowing project-level carbon footprints to be assessed and reported.
