Stone from waste

"Ideachip, manufacturers of the Allu processing bucket, have recently completed successful trials recovering valuable stone from stockpiles of material previously regarded as quarry waste. Trials were conducted with an Allu SMH4-17 bucket fitted to a Volvo wheel loader at various sites throughout southern and Northern Ireland."

"The Allu SMH4-17 consists of a Hardox 400/500 steel carcass with four rotating drums located at the rear. The 1,700mm long drums are fitted with a total of 96 600-Brinell forged blades. Twin heavy-duty hydraulic motors encased in the carcass of the bucket utilize power from the hydraulic pumps on the wheel loader to drive the drums."

"The Allu bucket is fitted in place of a standard wheel loader bucket. After collecting material from the stockpile, the drums are rotated causing the stone and clay to be agitated within the carcass, resulting in the separation of valuable aggregates from the waste clay. The aggregate and clay are then deposited on to their respective stockpiles. In most of the trial sites, where the clay content varied from free-flowing sandy loam to puddle clay, the Allu bucket succeeded where two-deck scalping grids had failed to process similar material sufficiently. A variety of blades was tried and it was discovered that the oval-style blade was best suited to free-flowing clays while sticky clays were handled better with the standard square blade."

"During the trials production figures of 150 tonnes/h were achieved with up to 80% of the processed material being quality stone. Larger units, such as the SMH4-23 and SMH4-27, are available where greater production is required."
