Made-to-measure replacement screen for Hanson’s Penderyn Quarry supplied in just 28 days

HEWITT Robins have recently designed, built and supplied a bespoke, made-to-measure screen to replace a failed Niagara D-11 unit at Hanson’s Penderyn Quarry, in South Wales, within a 28-day time frame.

The existing Niagara screen, which had been carefully maintained for more than 40 years, required replacement following the breakdown, and Hewitt Robins were able to offer a completely new machine designed to fit into the existing building with no modifications required.

With urgent delivery of the replacement screen being crucial to Hanson, the new Hewitt Robins V-11 1.6m x 4.8m double-deck inclined screen was designed, manufactured and ready for installation in just four weeks.

To achieve this, engineers from Hewitt Robins visited the quarry on the day the order was received and carried out a full-scale survey of the existing screen and installation. Working around the clock, they modelled the new the screen to suit the existing support structure within four days of receiving the order, thereby allowing sufficient time to manufacture the screen within Hanson’s 28-day time frame.

The Hewitt Robins V-11 double-deck screen is constructed of 10mm thick side plates with cross-members spaced every 600mm. The two-bearing, oil-lubricated screen also features a high-efficiency 11kW drive motor, pivoting motor base, close-fitting drive guard, coiled springs, rubber side-tensioned mats on its top deck and high-carbon woven wire on the bottom deck.

Quarry manager Gareth Evans commented: ‘We had a dilemma as to whether to carry out a major overhaul on the existing screen or replace it with a second-hand machine from another of our sites.

‘We then found Hewitt Robins who have replaced a number of Niagara D11 screens in the past, and they offered us a made-to-measure screen to fit into the existing building with an extremely quick delivery to suit our requirements.

‘We found Hewitt Robins to be very professional and easy to work with, and extremely competitive on price. But the most important thing for us was quick delivery, and for them to deliver a complete machine ready to lift into place in just 28 days from receiving the order was very impressive.’
