Skills boost for Lafarge quarry staff
EMPLOYEES at Europe’s largest granite quarry have taken part in a successful ‘Skills for Life’ pilot programme.
Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK, one of the major employers in the East Midlands, offered the four-month course to staff at their Mountsorrel Quarry, in Leicestershire, as part of a scheme to help boost literacy skills across the company’s workforce.
The course was delivered by South Leicestershire College (SLC) and resulted in a Skills for Life level 1 and 2 qualification for participants. Tailored to meet employees’ needs, an SLC trainer visited the site for weekly 2h sessions.
The successful delegates were presented with certificates at a ceremony at the company's head office in Syston. Robert Whetstone, managing director - aggregates, said: ‘I am proud of the group’s commitment to learning and self-improvement, and I heartily congratulate them on their achievements.’
Discussions are now underway to roll out further programmes, including a numeracy qualification, across the company’s other UK sites.
