Shorts Group opt for Volvo double-drum compactors

The new additions to Shorts plant-hire fleet were chosen following an evaluation of the machine and a competitive package on offer from Volvo and are a departure from the normal brand of rollers in Shorts’ fleet.

Jason Southam, Short’s plant depot manager, said: ‘We were more than satisfied that the attention to detail in the design of the Volvo DD24 and the overall build quality were good enough reasons to change to a new product in our fleet. We also operate a number of Volvo compact excavators so we also had the additional assurance of Volvo’s after-sales service and support network.’

The Volvo DD24 double-drum compactor weighs 2.6 tonnes and features a drum width of 1.2m. The drums feature dual frequencies operating at either 55Hz or 67Hz for optimal impact and delivering nominal amplitude of 0.53cm. A 260-litre pressurized water-feed system is directed via four nozzles per drum working in conjunction with spring-loaded, self-adjusting urethane wipers. The DD24 provides the machine operator with good forward and backward visibility to the drum edges. The machined drum surface with radiused and chamfered edges produce a professional quality finish on each job and a closed-loop hydrostatic drive system provides seamless direction changes and a maximum speed of up to 10 km/h.
