Scrap tyre solution

"SAPPHIRE Energy Recovery Ltd, specialists in environmentally friendly tyre disposal, have marked the implementation of the ban on the disposal of whole scrap tyres to landfill with the announcement that they have established the capacity to process over 100,000 used tyres a year."

"The company, a joint venture between Lafarge Cement and Michelin Tyre plc, operate a UK-wide network to source and process scrap tyres, principally for use in cement kilns."

"Sapphire’s managing director, Jamie Randall, said the company had delivered an industry-led solution to the problem of used tyre disposal in time for the implementation of the ban."

"‘We offer a strong, reliable network with access to cement kilns –– the main sustainable, high-capacity user of used tyres,’ he explained."

"Sapphire currently supply tyres for use as fuel at Lafarge Cement’s Cauldon, Dunbar, Hope and Westbury cement works. Their processing operations are at Cauldon and Dunbar, with a further site under development in Birmingham."

Lafarge have invested over £11 million in securing permits to use scrap tyres and in installing automated feed equipment at the cement kilns.

"The use of tyres in this way is permitted by the Environment Agency and has been proven in exhaustive trials to deliver environmental benefits, including dealing with what has traditionally been seen as a ‘problem’ waste, reducing emissions from cement factories and saving fossil fuels for future generations."

"‘With the level of disposal capacity for used tyres already established, it clearly now falls to the regulators to rigorously implement the ban on the disposal of whole tyres in landfill sites,’ said Mr Randall."
