Scouse powerhouse

As Liverpool gears up for the title – European Capital of Culture 2008 – construction on Merseyside is booming, radically altering the city centre and bringing about a transformation that will herald a new era for the region.

One of the contractors involved in the £920 million regeneration of Liverpool city centre is Widnes-based Grundy & Co. Excavations, who are carrying out a groundworks contract to pave way for a new underground car park that forms part of a mixed-use development, incorporating retail and residential amenities.

The company’s excavators have dug out more than 3,000 tonnes of sandstone, together with old foundations from the demolished buildings. As Grundy specialize in recycling, to maximize reclamation of reusable materials from the excavations, the company have added a Powerscreen Warrior 1400 screening plant, supplied by Blue Machinery, to their extensive fleet of wheel loaders, bulldozers, tippers and flat-bed dry screeners.

Grundy say they are reclaiming up to 70% of saleable material from the Liverpool contract, only sending clay and some subsoil to landfill. With the three-way split Warrior 1400 in operation, the company has the capability to produce: –20mm for use as a filler material, 20-50mm for sale as 6F2; and 50mm+ for crushing to a specified size.

There are numerous features on the 1400 designed to improve productivity and enhance maintenance procedures. For example, the machine has a highly aggressive screenbox with hydraulically adjustable screen angles; the bottom deck features a self-cleaning ball deck system; and the bottom screens are easily accessed for changing and maintenance.

The plant’s generously sized hopper, which is constructed from Hardox steel plates, has a hydraulically folding rear door to accommodate direct feed from a crusher working in tandem.

All the stockpiling conveyors are hydraulically folding, oversize and angle adjustable.

Mid-size material falls directly on to a mid-product conveyor, which has a special ‘slide-up’ system that allows easy access to the bottom deck meshes for cleaning, overhaul or replacement.
