RMC maintain lead in ready-mixed concrete

RMC continue to be the largest ready-mixed concrete producer in Great Britain, with an estimated national share of just over 26%, however the company’s lead over its competitors is said to be less than it was a few years ago, with both Hanson and Tarmac now having a national share of over 20%.

These are some of the conclusions of a recent report, published by BDS Marketing & Research Ltd, estimating the volumes of all ready-mixed concrete companies on a county, regional and national basis.

With the remaining top-five places being held by Lafarge and Aggregate Industries, the five leading companies are now said to represent over 80% of the market.

Despite this concentration, however, there remain about 150 independent companies in the industry. The BDS report includes further information on these companies, including plant locations, number of truckmixers and years of operation. In addition, there are a further 80 companies that supply lorry-mixed concrete or take ready-mixed concrete from an existing company.

According to BDS, RMC are the largest ready-mixed concrete company in 20 counties, with Hanson the largest in 17. The total market for ready-mixed concrete in 2001 was estimated to be 25.4 million cubic metres.
