RMC Group restructure for future growth

FOLLOWING a strategic review of the business by group chief executive David Munro, RMC have made a series of organizational changes to create a management and operational structure aimed at maximizing the Group’s opportunities for future development.

Mr Munro, who took up his position in January 2004, said an early and fundamental conclusion of the review was that RMC would remain focused on aggregates, cement and ready-mixed concrete.

The changes, which came into effect on 1 July, involve the creation of a new cement division and the grouping of the company’s materials businesses (aggregates, ready-mixed concrete and concrete products) into geographical regions.

As a consequence of the changes, Mike Foster and Graham Clark, who were appointed as executive directors in 2000 and 2002, respectively, have stepped down from the board but will stay on as advisors to the Group until the end of the year.

RMC’s materials operations will now be managed on the basis of four regions (UK and Ireland, The Americas, Southern Europe and Central Europe), each under the control of a managing director who will be a member of the executive committee and will report directly to the chief executive.

Until a UK managing director is appointed, David Munro will personally take charge of the materials business in the UK and Ireland, with Del Tanner, currently president and CEO of the Group’s US operations, heading The Americas, executive director Gerard Letourneau taking on responsibility for Southern Europe, and Stephan Brock, currently managing director of German operations, directing business in Central Europe.

All of RMC’s cement operations have been grouped together as a separate division under the control of executive committee member Jim Brooks.

In addition, David Walkerdine, previously finance director with Lafarge Cement, has been appointed as head of corporate development with responsibility for planning and executing RMC’s value-creation drive and growth strategy.

Commenting on the appointments, David Munro said: ‘We are confident that the new management structure, with its greater operational and regional focus, will provide a strong foundation on which we will build as we move forward with the development of our strategy.’
