Pegson Metrotrak on the Wirral

A Pegson tracked crusher has recently been commissioned for the Major Group at their urban recycling facility at the old coal depot in Birkenhead, Cheshire. The company traces its origins back to 1971 and was one of the earliest businesses to recycle materials destined for landfill. Since then the company has grown into the largest recycling facility on the Wirral, recycling over 75% of materials brought to the site.

With its proven crushing abilities, the new 900 x 600 Metrotrak is a machine well suited to the processing/ recycling of demolition materials on urban sites. Offering rapid set-up times and high manoeuvrability, it can be positioned close to where the materials are tipped and is easily moved around the site by remote control.

The 27-tonne crushing unit features a heavy-duty fabricated chassis and track frame on which is mounted a clean-running Caterpillar diesel power pack. Alongside this is a high performance 900 x 600 M-series single-toggle jaw crusher.

Feed to the crusher is by a double-stepped vibrating feeder/grizzly with motion provided by twin heavy-duty eccentric shafts in a sealed unit beneath the feeder. The crusher’s unrestricted feed opening allows it to accept ‘slab’ demolition materials, such as concrete. This, together with good discharge clearance on the product conveyor, allows lengths of reinforcing bar to pass through the crushing chamber for removal by an overband magnetic separator, which is supplied as standard.

Any fines or dirt falling through the grizzly bars can be stockpiled to the side of the plant by a side conveyor. Alternatively, the plant can produce an all-in product discharged at the 2.9m high conveyor head.

The unit is supplied with a fully skirted product conveyor and a hydraulic folding feed hopper. Dust-suppression sprays are fitted above and below the crusher and at the product conveyor head, to minimize dust emissions from the plant.

Commenting on the machine, managing director Phil Major said: ‘The new tracked crusher allows us to make full use of our on-site demolition crushing area to increase output of recycled, saleable sub-base materials.’
