New Volvo EC480E excavator for Ron Hull Demolition

Volvo EC480E excavator

South Yorkshire contractor opts for high-reach demolition-spec machine for maximum productivity and safety

ROTHERHAM-based Ron Hull Demolition Ltd have boosted their equipment fleet with the addition of a Volvo EC480E excavator rigged with high-reach demolition equipment.

Following extensive research and the evaluation process in sourcing the right machine for their operations, Ron Hull selected the demo-spec EC480E over other makes and brands on the market.

The Volvo excavator is equipped to a high specification and has been designed to meet the needs of the industry, providing optimum productivity and safety in all demolition applications.

The new EC480E for Ron Hull has been supplied with both a high-reach demolition three-piece boom and a multi-demolition boom – both of which are mounted on the patented Volvo modular base-boom joint system.

The machine also features a hydraulically adjustable undercarriage and demountable additional counterweight, giving the excavator an operating weight of 64 tonnes.

Other key optional features of the high-reach EC480E include: a fire-suppression system; and a Chalwyn engine air-intake shut-down valve for working in hazardous environments, such as petro-chemical facilities and refineries.

When fitted with the three-piece demolition rig, the machine offers a maximum pin height of 28m, a maximum reach of 16m and a generous safe operating angle of 15 degrees.

This is the second time a multi-demolition boom option has been sold on a Volvo machine in the UK, giving Ron Hull a variety of operating options for different types of demolition work.

For instance, the machine can be simply rigged with the secondary boom and dipper arm for normal digging duties. The addition of the multi boom, which is a 3.4m extension piece that fits between the modular base-boom joint and the remainder of the rig, gives the machine increased flexibility and allows a maximum tool weight of five tonnes to be used.

The equipment can be fitted in a straight position providing a pin height of 15.8m and a safe working radius of 8m. It can also be reconfigured to work in an angled or bent position, again with a maximum tool weight of five tonnes.

This configuration also allows the machine to reach a pin depth of 7m and is a solution for underground demolition projects, such as basements, car parks and underwater jobs.

The EC480E is powered by a Stage IV emission-compliant Volvo 13-litre engine (376hp). In addition to the standard hammer shear hydraulics, the machine is equipped with optional X3 rotation circuits.

Operator visibility and comfort is enhanced with a hydraulically tilting cab, which is protected by a frame-mounted falling object guard (FOG). For added protection, a side impact protection system is fitted on the superstructure and the excavator comes with heavy-duty 10mm underbelly plates.

The demolition-spec EC480E is also fitted with Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system, which allows remote monitoring of a wide range of machine functions (eg location, fuel consumption, service reminders etc), thus optimizing Ron Hull’s operations.
