New European concrete standard to be adopted

THE new European concrete standard, EN206-1: Concrete - Part 1. Specification, performance, production and conformity, has received a positive formal vote from contributing European countries. EN206-1 will be published in early 2001 and, as part of a package of standards, will replace existing standards fully before 2003.

The new standard will be a major step towards European standardisation in the concrete producers' market. It contains common terminology, a comprehensive classification system based on exposure classes, and is supported by strength and other performance requirements.

According to the QPA, the impact upon concrete producers will be immediate, particularly as the new performance requirements will necessitate rigorous training and preparations before implementation. To ease this process, the Ready-Mixed Concrete Bureau and the Institute of Concrete Technology are providing training for concrete producers on implementing EN206-1.

The new standard will be supported by national provisions in a number of key areas, such as durability and the use of ground granulated blast-furnace slag. These provisions will be given in BS8500, a complementary British Standard to EN206-1 which is currently being prepared.

A DETR PiT project is co-ordinating the supporting documentation. This will include a derived document containing the whole of EN206-1, the complementary BS8500, plus a commentary which will be available in a single, user-friendly BSI publication.
