Multi-million pound pavement engineering initiative

THE University of Nottingham, Shell Bitumen and Shell Global Solutions (UK) have announced plans for a multimillion pound initiative to construct and operate a purpose-built, state-of-the-art pavement engineering facility.

Based at the University, the Nottingham Centre for Pavement Engineering will provide cutting-edge research facilities for bituminous and other paving materials for the Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering Division of the University's School of Civil Engineering, and will allow Shell Bitumen to offer increased levels of customer support.

Nottingham University's partnership with Shell dates back to 1954, when a research contract was awarded by the company for the study of cracking in asphalt pavements. This led to a series of research contracts over the next 20 years, as well as collaboration with other organizations from 1992 to 1995 for the development of a series of test methods for bituminous materials.

The new venture will create a significant number of new jobs and will complement the University's exisitng links with Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering Ltd.
