Major flood-defence contract for Aggregate Industries

Strood Waterfront Project in Kent

Company chosen as exclusive sub-base supplier for Medway riverside development

AGGREGATE Industries have been selected as the exclusive supplier of sub-base aggregate for flood-defence works at the Strood Waterfront Project in Medway, Kent. The ambitious redevelopment scheme to revamp the Strood riverside will see the construction of up to 1,600 new homes, as well as new business premises and recreational space.

As part of the project, around £3.5 million has been earmarked for flood-defence works to ensure all new structures are adequately protected from the risk of flooding.

Earlier this year, Aggregate Industries were chosen as the supplier of choice by contractors Ovenden Earthmoving and Volker Stevin after demonstrating their ability to provide large volumes of quality-specified aggregate within tight time frames.

To date, the company has supplied 90,000 tonnes of 6F4 granite from Glensanda, with a further 30,000 tonnes expected to be delivered in the coming months. The flood-defence works are expected to conclude by July 2019.

Aggregate Industries’ South East team is utilizing its well-placed aggregate terminal on the Isle of Grain, in Kent, to ensure a consistent, efficient supply to the Strood development at rates in excess of 1,250 tonnes a day.

Aggregate Industries director Mark Willshee said: ‘I’m delighted that Aggregate Industries have been chosen to supply the flood-defence works on this highly prestigious redevelopment of the Strood riverside. Our aim over the coming months will be to do what we do best; deliver the highest-quality sub-base aggregate in the quickest and most efficient way possible.’

Chris Barwick, managing director of Ovenden Earthmoving, added: ‘We are pleased to have Aggregate Industries on board as our supplier of choice on this major flood-defence project.

‘Over the last year, the Aggregate Industries’ South East team has demonstrated that it has the top-grade aggregate, technical advice, extensive supply capabilities and the local delivery network needed to support the execution of this complex project. We look forward to further developing our working relationship in the future.’
