Liebherr invest €35 million in new logistics facility

Liebherr ground-breaking ceremony

Construction of new logistics centre for production gets under way in Kirchdorf an der Iller

LIEBHERR-Hydraulikbagger GmbH are making a major investment in a new logistics centre for production in Kirchdorf an der Iller, Germany – the birthplace of the Liebherr Group back in 1949.

The first phase of construction of the new centre commenced on 11 June 2018 with an official ground-breaking ceremony (pictured). In total, Liebherr will invest around €35 million in the project, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2020.

‘With the restructuring and the optimization of the material flow, the logistics centre will make an important contribution in the future to efficient and high-quality production,’ said Matthias Herzog, production manager at Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH.

When completed, the new centre will measure some 245m in length x 96m in width x 22m in height. Liebherr say the biggest challenge facing the project will be the fact that demolition of the existing warehouse and construction work will be taking place during ongoing logistic operations. In order to guarantee the material supply, construction of the new centre will be realized in two stages.

The first phase, which should be completed by the end of 2019, will involve the construction of a new incoming goods area with a high-bay warehouse. An air lock for lorries together with a 20-tonne crane system will greatly facilitate the acceptance of goods.

In the second stage, another high-bay warehouse and logistics areas for order picking, consolidation and packaging will be built. Workstations will be equipped with modern technical systems and complex logistical requirements will be supported by a warehouse-management system. Modern picking vehicles with a driver-assistance system will also be utilized at the facility.
