Lafarge promote new generation of artics

"LAFARGE Aggregates have produced a short film on CD-ROM to promote the introduction of 29 new articulated tipper trucks into their delivery fleet. The company say the new six-axle ‘artics’, which have set a standard for tipper safety in the UK and comply with IRTE category A specifications for tipping on uneven ground, will bring economic and environmental benefits compared to the more common eight-wheel ‘rigids’."

"‘Seven articulated trucks can deliver the volume of aggregates carried by 10 rigid vehicles,’ said Lafarge’s national transport manager, Reg Greatbatch. ‘A 2,000-tonne order, for example, would take at least 30 loads less if artics were used. Operated for a year at a typical three loads a day, the 29 new trucks could save more than 10,000 vehicle movements. In turn, that would cut fuel costs and help to reduce pollution and traffic congestion."

"‘In addition, the artics’ improved manoeuvrability can make it easier to deliver into tight spots.’"

"Some of the concerns surrounding the use of articulated vehicles have been addressed by Lafarge, who worked with suppliers on projects such as rigorous stability trials (believed to be the first in the UK to be conducted at 44 tonnes) to ensure that the trucks are among the safest tipping artics in the UK. The new vehicles feature an in-cab stability warning system linked to a trailer-mounted inclinometer, to warn drivers of potential instability, and reversing cameras with in-cab CCTV."

"As well as greater manoeuvrability, all 29 new trucks are fitted with differential locks for better traction, a road-friendly air-suspension system, and shallower, fully insulated bodies to keep hot surfacing materials warm for longer."

"Mr Greatbatch, added: ‘The economic and environmental benefits of using articulated trucks are clear. The advantages have become more significant due to the recent change in legislation which permits the use of vehicles of up to 44 tonnes gross weight. We have made a major investment in bringing these vehicles into our fleet and they will certainly improve the productivity of our distribution operations.’"
