K-Atomics engineering leads the way for Walters

South Wales-based Walters Plant Hire have been so impressed with the performance of the Komatsu HM400 articulated dumptruck that they recently ordered another five from sole UK distributors Marubeni-Komatsu.

Walters, who specialize in mobile plant for the earthmoving, civil engineering, mining and demolition industry, were the first company in the country to purchase four HM400 trucks, in February 2005. The trucks have been so well received within the market that late last year Walters decided to increase their fleet to nine.

The HM400’s Komatsu-designed electronically controlled transmission, known as K-Atomics, is designed to give the operator optimum control of the machine. The system controls the engine and transmission by monitoring the vehicle conditions, so that when the clutch is engaged, the right clutch pressure is in force, thereby preventing shock movements and maintaining the maximum comfort level for the operator.

In the wet, the HM400’s six-wheel-drive system reduces slippage. For greater traction the multiple-disc interaxle clutch locks three axles together. This can be switched on or off while the truck is in operation for better economy.

Like all Komatsu machines, the HM400 ensures maximum operator comfort by offering a spacious cab, easy-to-access instrument panels, a tilting steering column and low-effort pedals to help reduce operator fatigue and thereby prolong productivity levels.

Huw Richards, director of Walters Plant Hire, said: ‘The HM400 is a very well built truck and we have been impressed with its performance and quality.’
