Innovation award for Lafarge concrete
LAFARGE Readymix have earned an innovation award for their carbon-cutting commercial flooring concrete, Extensia. The product received the Innovation Business Award at the annual Constructing Excellence East Midlands Regional Awards held in at the Leicester Tigers’ stadium.
The award aims to recognize new solutions, focusing on key business drivers such as quality, time and cost. Beating three other finalists, Extensia was applauded for its environmental credentials and advanced properties.
Unlike conventional concrete, Extensia features low-shrinkage technology, requiring no steel mesh or fibres to control drying shrinkage. In addition, its high flexural strength means it can be laid in thinner slabs, reducing the amount of material required, and when set the surface can be polished to offset the need for flooring finishes.
This formulation means the use of Extensia can reduce the carbon emissions of the construction process by 20%, while the absence of steel makes the product 100% recyclable.
Emma Hines, sustainable construction and development manager, and Felicity Jelly, Readymix marketing manager, picked up the award from Falklands hero Simon Weston. Emma said: ‘Being able to reduce this concrete’s CO2 by 20% is a huge step forward for us but it is only the start of even greater things to come in the future.’
