Hot storage solutions

Earlier this year FMA Ullrich, together with their agents, B.G. Europa (UK) Ltd, installed a brand new 400-tonne hot-asphalt storage system at SteelPhalt’s slag aggregate plant in Rotherham to help satisfy the increasing demand for steel slag asphalt.

SteelPhalt, who have been based in South Yorkshire for over 35 years, specialize in the processing and marketing of steel slag, a by-product of the local steel-making industry. During this time several million tonnes of steel slag have been successfully processed by the company into a variety of aggregate products, taking advantage of the material’s skid-resistance, durability and strength.

Over the years SteelPhalt have developed a number of high-quality asphalt surfacing materials, purpose designed to combat high stress, noise and surface deformation in locations such as ports and wharfs, steel mills, electricity power generation plants and local and national highways.

Installed in February 2002, the new RS400/4 storage system has allowed SteelPhalt to increase output from their existing steel slag asphalt plant by helping to improve production efficiency. The new system includes four circular silos (of different sizes) with a total capacity of 400 tonnes. All four are fitted with Hardox-lined silo cones for extended life, and all are mounted on load-cells to provide accurate truck loading. Twin discharge gates automatically regulate the feed rate to achieve even greater weighing accuracy.

The storage system at Rotherham is fitted with a UCC4 control system with colour graphics and a diagnostic modem link direct to Ullrich’s offices in Germany.

Meanwhile, in a separate contract, two Ullrich type 200/4 silos have been supplied to Tarmac Western Ltd for their site at Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury. The silos were ordered together for installation on the site’s existing Barber-Greene and UMM asphalt plants.

Each storage system features four compartments which provide a total storage capacity of 200 tonnes per plant. The silos are positioned over weighbridges which, together with the Ullrich UCC4 control system, provide accurate truck loading.
