Glendinning buy Cornish quarry
GLENDINNING, the West Country’s largest independent suppliers of quarry and concrete products, have purchased the hardstone quarry business of Penhill Quarry & Haulage Ltd, based near Bude, for an undisclosed sum.
The family-owned business of Penhill, which recently gained planning consent to work further reserves at Pigsdon Quarry, produces a range of hardcores, building and rockery stone and high-PSV aggregates, the latter having Devon County Council and Cornwall County Council approval for use on the roads throughout the two counties.
The acquisition not only maintains the family-owned status of the Glendinning business, but also complements the major investment the company is making in a new asphalt plant at Linhay Hill Quarry, Ashburton, which is currently undergoing commissioning.
Ian Ashford, managing director, said: ‘This is an excellent purchase for Glendinning which will help strengthen our business across the West Country. It will allow us to enter the asphalt wearing course market with a secure supply of high-PSV hardstone available to us from within the West Country, while at the same time giving us an even greater range of products and road contracting services produced in house.’
Commenting on the sale of Penhill, Roy Pengilley of Penhill Quarry & Haulage, said: ‘When Glendinning approached us about purchasing the business, we felt that this was the right way forward. Like Penhill, Glendinning are also very much a family business and we know that they will strive to take the company successfully into 2010 and beyond.’
