FM Conway scoop sustainability business award

Michael Conway

UK infrastructure services firm awarded ‘Big Tick’ at Business in the Community’s Responsible Business Awards

FM Conway have been recognized with a ‘Big Tick’ as part of the prestigious Responsible Business Awards 2014, run by charity organization Business in the Community.

The company achieved the Big Tick in the Sustainable Products and Services category in recognition of the steps it has taken to embed environmental sustainability into its services.

Each year FM Conway divert 450,000 tonnes of construction waste from landfill and supply 220,000 tonnes of recycled aggregates to construction sites in the South East of England. Despite road maintenance being a highly resource-heavy industry, the company has made great strides towards eliminating the use of virgin materials in its operations, as well as recycling 98% of all waste it generates.

Along with the Big Tick, FM Conway are also one of six companies that have been shortlisted to present their programme to a select group of senior business peers, with a chance to be named overall winner in the Sustainable Products and Services Award category.

Around 60 companies have been shortlisted across all the categories and the winners will be announced on 8 July 2014 in London, at the Business in the Community’s National Awards Gala Dinner, in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales and in partnership with the 2013 Responsible Business of the Year, Jaguar Land Rover.

Michael Conway, CEO of FM Conway, said: ‘Being awarded the Big Tick and shortlisted for one of the Responsible Business Awards is a truly great honour for FM Conway, and a fitting tribute to the hard work that has gone into making this business what it is today.

‘At FM Conway recycling and reuse of materials isn’t just a part of what we do – it’s fundamental to the way the entire business works. We take materials from the south-east’s roads and recycle them directly back into our construction projects, taking what is traditionally a carbon-intensive industry and driving it toward zero waste.

‘It’s important both for the environment and for us as a business. Being a sustainable contractor and materials supplier makes us a more attractive partner for our clients to work with and has helped us grow our turnover rapidly during challenging economic times.’

Stephen Howard, chief executive of Business in the Community, added: ‘All year round, responsible businesses across the UK are contributing towards more resilient communities, stimulating local economies, creating diverse, skilled and healthy workforces and addressing skills shortages - yet these activities rarely get attention.

‘The Responsible Business Awards shine a much-needed spotlight on the powerful impact of business. Each of the companies recognized is playing its part to build a new contract between business and society and a more sustainable future for us all.  I congratulate FM Conway for its Big Tick, which is a powerful symbol of business doing more to bring about change.’
