Flygt afloat at Double Arches Quarry

ITT Flygt have recently provided WBB Minerals’ Double Arches silica sand quarry at Heath and Reach, near Leighton Buzzard, with two submersible dewatering pumps and associated pump flotation modules (PFMs) to keep the quarry’s water-recycling scheme running smoothly.

WBB Minerals’ area project manager, Bob Consitt, explained, ‘We contacted Flygt to deliver a floating pump system that did not need priming and was a different arrangement to the current end-suction configuration. Flygt supplied and installed two 10in BS2250 submersible dewatering pumps each fitted with a PFM.

‘Since installation the combined package has operated successfully with no need for priming. The two pumps run in parallel to supply water from a single storage lagoon to the wash plant, and recycle it back into our sand-extraction process.

‘Each PFM adds value as a reliable flotation system, remaining on the water surface for easy recovery and identification. This method also ensures that cleaner water passes through the system as the pumps are not sitting on the lagoon bottom.’

ITT Flygt’s pump flotation module was launched last year to provide a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to the traditional steel pontoon in dewatering applications. It can be configured with Flygt’s range of 2000-series dewatering pumps, 3000-series waste water pumps and 5000-series slurry pumps, and is suitable for quarries, construction site dewatering, aeration ponds, sludge lagoons and in other sewage treatment plant applications.

The product is prefabricated from lightweight, foam-filled, glass-reinforced polymer skin to prevent sinking and is available in four different sizes. The BS2250 pumps and integral flotation modules were installed using a towable central stainless-steel lifting attachment and secured into position by anchor/guy ropes.

Meanwhile, in response to customer demand, ITT Flygt have recently injected further capital investment into their rental division with the introduction of a larger range of specialist sewage-handling electric submersible ‘super pumps’ into the fleet. The new pumps include the N3301, N3231, N3356 and the N3312, providing a performance range up to 180kW for use in a wide range of applications. As well as this new investment, Flygt have also recently opened two more Rental Centres in Warrington and Bishops Stortford, taking their total to seven.

Flygt Rental primarily serve the quarrying, mining, construction and municipal industries, specializing in the rental of submersible pumps, mixers, aerators and prime-assisted diesel pumps for the emergency, temporary or semi-permanent pumping of non-clean water and effluent. The division also has its own transportation fleet, all featuring cranes, for the delivery and collection of equipment.
