FCC Environment regain waste industry top spot

Landfill operator

Latest BDS report says company continues to be the largest landfill operator in the UK

IN their latest annual report on the waste industry, BDS Marketing Research have confirmed that FCC Environment continues to be the largest landfill operator in the UK.

The other leading companies include: Viridor; Biffa; Suez; Veolia; and Cory. Together, these businesses represent more than an estimated 55% of all wastes commercially landfilled in 2014.

The BDS report entitled: ‘Estimated volumes of waste accepted by landfill sites in Great Britain’, found a steady trend of decline in the market shares of the leading companies due to the closure of landfill sites and alternative technologies being used. In 2012 the market share of the top six companies was over 60%.

The study found the closure of nearly 40 landfill sites over the past year. This brings the total number of closures to around 200 sites since 2008.

In addition, the market has seen a further drop in landfilled waste as the consultancy estimates that landfill sites now take less than 25 million tonnes of waste a year, the lowest figure recorded. According to BDS, landfilled waste was down 12% in 2014, compared with the previous year.
