Doosan loaders for sand handling in Lancashire

A pair of the latest DL400 wheel loaders from Doosan Daewoo has recently been delivered to Williams Sand & Gravel for use at their sand quarry near Leyland in Lancashire.

Supplied by new local dealer PlantLink of Rainford, on Merseyside, the two loaders have been equipped with 3.9m3 capacity buckets with bolt-on cutting edges plus auto-lubrication and weighing systems, and are being used to help with the extraction of up to 1,000 tonnes of sand a day.

The DL400s have replaced machines of a different make, which had given a variety of problems over the past five years, compounded by ineffective back-up service. According to owner Alan Williams, the switch to Doosan Daewoo was made as a result of a recommendation from another quarry operator combined with a very successful on-site demonstration.

Commenting on the new models, quarry manager John Cusack said: ‘The DL400s are proving very comfortable to operate thanks to their air-suspension seats and ride-control systems, and are noticeable quieter than our previous machines. Also, besides the very welcome air-conditioning control systems and excellent visibility from the cabs, the limited-slip differentials fitted as standard will be of great benefit during the winter months when our ground conditions become notoriously slippery.’

The DL400 weighs just under 23 tonnes and is powered by a Stage III emissions-compliant Cummins QSL9 diesel engine, which develops 231kW (310hp) at 1,700 rev/min, driving through a ZFtransmission and ZF axles with outboard, oil-immersed disc brakes.
