CRH claim top spot in Northern Ireland

CRH are believed to have taken over from Lagan as the largest quarrying company in Northern Ireland. The company has also become the largest ready-mixed concrete producer in the province, taking over the position previously held by CEMEX.

These are some of the conclusions of a series reports recently published on quarrying, ready-mixed concrete and asphalt by industry marketing consultants BDS Marketing Research Ltd.

In aggregates, BDS estimate that CRH now have 10% of the market, slightly more than Lagan and the Quinn Group.

 

On a county basis, CRH, operating as Northstone, are the largest producers in Co. Antrim and major suppliers in Co. Down, Co. Fermanagh and Co. Tyrone, while Lagan are market leaders in Down and Quinn are largest in Fermanagh.

In ready-mixed concrete, CRH have taken over from CEMEX as market leaders in the province. Together, BDS estimate that these two companies have a combined 30% of the market. A further 40 suppliers have been identified in this sector.

Meanwhile, Lagan continue as the largest asphalt suppliers in Northern Ireland with a share estimated at 25%. BDS place CRH in second place with a share of 18%.
