CEMEX receive sustainability award

CEMEX have been named an ‘Energy Star Partner of the Year’ for the second year running for their continued achievements in energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2009, the building materials group reduced its overall energy intensity by 2.2% as a result of better energy management using Energy Star guidelines. Over 1.1 million MMBTUs (Million Metric British Thermal Units) were saved through measures, such as commissioning two cement lines using state-of-the-art vertical roller mills for finish grinding, replacing and repairing compressed air system, and upgrading plant lighting.

‘Our work through the Energy Star programme is a part of our commitment to sustainability,’ said Gilberto Perez, president of CEMEX USA. ‘For two years in a row, we have successfully managed our energy, reducing our usage and thereby, cutting our CO2 footprint. We are honoured that our achievements have caught the Environment Protection Agency’s eye and we will continue to be industry leaders pushing the bar for sustainability.’

CEMEX’s accomplishments will be formally recognized at the forthcoming 2010 Partner of the Year Awards ceremony held in Washington, DC. Award winners are selected from more than 17,000 organizations.
