Canning success in UAE

Canning Conveyor, manufacturers of bulk materials handling equipment, have supplied two conveyor belt reeling stations to South Africa-based SENET for a plant construction project near Abu Dhabi.

In supplying the conveyor belt reelers for use on conveyors installed at Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), Canning designed, manufactured (with corrosion protection) and fully assembled the two bespoke units. In-house testing was also carried out prior to delivery to site.

One of the belt reelers is a Canning C1800 powered-belt model (3.1m in diameter), which has been incorporated into a spider frame designed to handle up to a maximum 1,800mm belt width and approximately 20mm thickness of type ST1000 transverse reinforced steel cord belting.

The reeler is capable of pulling up to 1,500m of steel cord belt from the conveyor system while moving the belt along the conveyor rollers. Suitable for reeling up to 400mm lengths, the C1800 is driven by a 30kW electric drive and brake geared motor via a chain drive. It is suitable for a three-phase, 415V, 50Hz power supply and is fully guarded to meet current health and safety standards.

The second system is a non-powered reeler specially built for the EMAL project. It includes a 100W hand-wheel and released side-mounted disc brake which was sourced in Canada.

Both reeling stations were manufactured to a very high customer specification, incorporating a 30kW control panel to IP65, wall-mounted enclosure and MCCB with overloads and push buttons.

The full design and manufacture took around 14 weeks to complete and a spares package for the equipment, including full operating and servicing manuals, was included.

Bruce Watts, engineering director for SENET, commented: ‘The belt reelers were used extensively during the installation stage of the project and they will be used again during phase two. Once this stage is completed, the Canning equipment will be kept on site to be utilized for conveyor belt replacement.’
