Cadzow Heavy Haulage take delivery of flagship Mercedes-Benz truck

Abnormal load specialists Cadzow Heavy Haulage have a new flagship trailer – a Mercedes-Benz Actros Titan, which is plated for special types of operation at 250 tonnes.

The truck left the Mercedes-Benz plant in Germany as a specially prepared 6x4 tractor unit powered by a 448kW (609hp) V8 engine. It was then sent to Titan Spezialfahrzeugbau GmbH, of Backnang, near Stuttgart, where it was converted to its 8x4 specification.

As well as adding the extra steering axle and other ancillary equipment required for heavy haulage operation, Titan extensively reinforced the chassis. Pressure on space necessitated relocation of the air tanks, batteries, exhaust stack and hydraulic transmission coolers behind the cab, along with the 900-litre fuel and 95-litre AdBlue tanks.

Cadzow, based in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, operate three other Mercedes-Benz Actros Titans. Supplied by Bellshill dealer Western Commercial, this latest truck is their first from the new-generation Actros range launched last year and cost some £180,000.

‘Our Mercedes-Benz Titans have done us proud since we bought our first two from Western Commercial in 2003,’ said Cadzow managing director, Jim Macauley. ‘They’ve always been man enough for the job and very reliable, our only outlays having been on the kind of wear and tear items you would expect.

‘There’s no doubt that Mercedes-Benz makes a good heavy truck, which explains why most of the guys in this very specialized business choose to run them.’

Cadzow’s latest Actros Titan has a long-distance sleeper cab that boasts numerous optional extras, including air-conditioning, comfort suspension seats for both the driver and co-driver, tinted windows, a pop-up electric roof, a refrigerator and a CD-radio with bluetooth phone connection.
