BMAPA awards for Tarmac Marine Dredging

Tarmac win two awards from British Marine Aggregates Producers Association for best finds from wharves and ships

TARMAC have won two awards from the British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) for the best finds from wharves and ships during 2009/10.

Ridham Wharf, near Sittingbourne, Kent, won ‘Best Find’ for the discovery of nine pieces of late 18th Century silver tableware (pictured). From the crest on a goblet bowl, specialists were able to identify it as belonging to the sixth Earl of Stair, John Dalrymple (1749-1821).

Meanwhile, a mammoth tooth helped Erith Wharf on the river Thames win ‘Best Attitude by a Wharf’ for its detailed reporting of the finds discovered, which were many and varied during the year. They included cannonballs and cutlery as well as a ship’s timber and the mammoth tooth.

The mammoth tooth is said to be of particular importance as it will help build a picture of the prehistoric landscape around the coast of Britain.

Commenting on the awards, Kevin Seaman, Tarmac Marine Dredging’s managing director, said: ‘I’m really pleased that Tarmac wharves have won these awards – they’re a credit to all the staff involved and a measure of the responsible attitude of the staff involved.’
