Biodegradable hydraulic fluids

Shell Oils UK have launched a new range of biodegradable, synthetic hydraulic fluids designed to help construction and quarrying companies reduce the risk of contaminating waterways and woodlands.

The Shell Naturelle range has been formulated using synthetic esters and a specially tailored system of additives to ensure complete environ-mental compatibility. It will be of particular benefit to operators of 360° excavators as the Environment Agency is looking to make the use of biodegradable hydraulic fluids compulsory in all construction contracts from 1 January 2005.

The biodegradable properties of Shell Naturelle means that in the event of an oil spill it will be quickly and extensively broken down by the environment’s micro-organisms and converted into harmless carbon dioxide and water.

The Environment Agency is already using Shell Naturelle in its contracted machinery and vehicles working in environmentally sensitive situations and is recommending its use to other companies.

The Shell Naturelle range includes: hydraulic fluids, greases, gear oils, transmission oils and cleaners. Shell are supporting the range by offering oil-spill equipment and Shell eQuip — a comprehensive equipment condition-monitoring service.
