Babcock awarded major fleet-management contract

£100 million contract with Lafarge marks a global first in the aggregate and cement sector

LAFARGE have awarded Babcock International Group a £100 million 10-year contract to provide a fleet-management service for their heavy mobile equipment located across the company’s aggregate and cement sites in North America.

The programme follows the £50 million fleet-management contract awarded to Babcock – the UK’s leading engineering support services organization – in July 2011, which covers Lafarge’s aggregate and cement sites in the UK.

Under the new contract, Babcock are delivering a whole lifecycle approach to managing Lafarge’s fleet of heavy vehicles and equipment, from procuring and supporting the equipment through to arranging equipment disposal. The deal covers vehicles such as large wheel loaders, rigid and articulated dumptrucks, excavators and bulldozers.

Through their proven partnering approach, Babcock say Lafarge will be able to focus on their core activity of delivering construction materials, while benefitting from the efficiencies, a multi-jurisdictional overview of their fleet operations and the sharing of best practice that this new service will deliver.

Commenting on the deal, Neal Misell (pictured), Babcock’s managing director, Mobile Assets, said: ‘This contract marks a significant milestone with Lafarge. Following the successful UK roll-out, our dedicated team in North America is ready to deliver the highest level of support to Lafarge’s aggregates and cement businesses, allowing transformation in the way their fleet is operated and managed.’

Babcock currently manage close on 30,000 vehicles and over 176,000 equipment stock lines globally. This includes: a 16-year PFI C vehicles capability contract to deploy and support 2,200 engineering support vehicles around the world on behalf of the Royal Engineers and Royal Logistics Corps; the White Fleet contract providing a range of over 14,000 vehicles to the Ministry of Defence; as well as managing British Airways’ UK airside vehicles and the Metropolitan Police Service’s operational fleet.

Using their proven delivery method ALCAMiE, Babcock say they can transform that way that customers optimize their fleet and equipment availability, improving performance and reducing the lifetime costs of ownership.
