Asfalttikallio expand capacity and sustainability with new 1,000-tonne mixed-material silo

AMMANN have successfully completed the design and installation of a custom-built 1,000-tonne mixed-material silo at Asfalttikallio’s asphalt plant in Tuusula, Finland. The project, which also includes a high-efficiency double-skip system, significantly increases the customer’s storage capacity, improves operational flexibility, and supports more sustainable asphalt production.

The new 1,000-tonne silo complements an existing 800-tonne storage unit at the Tuusula plant, more than doubling the facility’s total silo capacity. With this expansion, Asfalttikallio can better manage peak production periods, store larger volumes of mixed asphalt in advance, and respond quickly to shifting project demands or sudden weather changes.

‘Ammann worked closely with us to understand our plant layout, production goals, and day-to-day operational needs,’ said Arho Pylkkanen from Asfalttikallio. ‘The result is a solution that not only expands our capacity, but also enhances the speed and quality of our output.’

A key feature of the new installation is Ammann’s double-skip solution, developed to eliminate potential delays caused by skip travel time from the mixer to the silos. By operating two skips, material can be transported efficiently, ensuring uninterrupted production and reducing the risk of bottlenecks, particularly during high-output periods.

The new setup also gives operators more control and flexibility when managing different asphalt recipes, allowing seamless switching between storage silos based on project requirements.

However, Ammann’s solution goes beyond production efficiency, as it is also designed to support Asfalttikallio’s sustainability objectives by reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and optimizing resource use. The added storage also allows longer production runs and fewer start-stop cycles, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and equipment wear.

In addition, the plant’s modern as1 control system, intelligent loading, and improved thermal insulation all contribute to a more efficient and eco-friendly operation – aligning with the company’s long-term vision of building sustainable infrastructure for future generations.

The success of the Tuusula silo expansion is also a reflection of the strong and trusted partnership between Ammann and Asfalttikallio. Ammann’s expertise in custom-engineering solutions for modern asphalt production plants was key to delivering a project that Asfalttikallio say has not only met but ‘exceeded’ expectations.

‘We are proud to work with Ammann, who consistently understand our goals and operational realities,’ added Mr Pylkkanen. ‘Together, we’ve created a setup that’s not only technically advanced, but also scalable and future-proof.’
