Adaptable dumptrucks

T. French & Son (Earthwork) Ltd of Cumnock, Ayrshire, have adapted two new Volvo A35D articulated dumptrucks for coal-handling duties at A.T.H. Resources’ Skares Road OCCS.

Delivered last June, both trucks underwent significant changes to the standard bodies by increasing the overall body height by 1m and adding a full tailgate. The work was carried out in-house by T. French & Son with the result that both units are now capable of hauling 32 tonnes of coal rated at 0.8 tonnes/m3.

The A35Ds are equipped with Volvo’s new electronically controlled 12-litre diesel engine, especially adapted for the demands of an articulated hauler to provide a rating of 289kW. The engine is also equipped with two separate cooling systems with thermostatically controlled hydraulic-powered fans.

Commenting on the purchase, plant manager Tom French said: ‘We are very pleased with the truck’s performance and especially the Volvo engine brake feature. Access to the engine compartment is excellent and the extended 500h service intervals are a real plus.’
