Widely recognized for developing global practices that demonstrate the effectiveness of sustainable construction, Mr Head has promoted the use of concrete, steel, and composite materials for sustainable construction, as reflected in the Second Severn Crossing in south-west England and the Docklands Light Railway in London, among many other prestigious works around the world.

He has won many honours and awards during his career, including a CBE for services to civil engineering and the environment, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Award of Merit, a Silver Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering and an OBE for services to bridge engineering.

In 2008, Mr Head was named by The Guardian newspaper as one of 50 people that could save the planet, and was cited by Time magazine as one of 30 global eco-heroes. In 2012, he was one of 100 engineers and scientists selected to have his life story recorded in the aural history of Britain at the British Library.

From 2004 to 2011, Mr Head created and directed the global planning and integrated urbanism practice of Arup Group, where he led several projects including the Dongtan Eco City in China.

Since 2011 he has actively worked at his organization, the Ecological Sequestration Trust, which gathers renowned scientists, engineers, economists, financiers, and specialists worldwide to help regions and communities in developing urban design plans that face global warming challenges and resource scarcity.

Since 2000 and as part of the CEMEX Building Award, the ‘Lorenzo H. Zambrano’ Lifetime Achievement Award has paid tribute to renowned personalities within the construction industry, whose bodies of work have made significant contributions to the well-being of communities worldwide, and whose legacy will continue to foster sustainable building practices.

The award honours the memory of CEMEX’s former chairman and chief executive, Lorenzo H. Zambrano, an industrialist and business leader who not only was instrumental in transforming CEMEX from a local cement producer into a leading global company, but also was known for his passionate commitment to nature conservancy and sustainability.
