Volvo’s latest ABG Paver

First published in the January 2015 issue of Quarry Management as Power and Precision

With its Stage IIIB-certified engine and a new design, the Volvo P6870C ABG paver is now quieter, more productive, and up to 30% more fuel efficient

Designed for maximum paving flexibility in applications ranging from housing estates to major highway projects, Volvo’s P6870C ABG wheeled paver now comes equipped with the new Stage IIIB Volvo D6 engine, which is said to lead its class in noise reduction as well as being more fuel efficient than previous models, with significantly reduced CO2 emissions. The engine features a wide band of reserve power for paving in difficult conditions or at maximum widths.

The Volvo P6870C ABG also features a new fume-extraction system that removes fumes from the working environment at 83% efficiency without significantly increasing fuel consumption or noise, or obstructing the operator’s view into the auger channel. The system works by utilizing a fume intake with a fan located directly behind it. The fan captures and transports bituminous fumes via two tubes which release the fumes at the top of the paver. The very short distance between the intake and the fan eliminates the need for extra piping and funnelling in the auger channel, thereby increasing efficiency, preventing power losses and ensuring maximum visibility into the auger channel.

For greater versatility, the paver is equipped with three drive modes: paving, shunting and transport. In paving mode, smart power is the default setting. This dramatically lowers noise and reduces fuel consumption by as much as 30%, although full engine rev/min can be selected if paving conditions require full power. In shunting mode, which is suitable for manoeuvring, loading and unloading, paving functions are deactivated and active steering is engaged for turning with a tight inner radius of 2.5m. In transport mode, full travel speed is initiated for quick relocation of the machine. Both shunting and transport modes regulate engine speed proportionally to promote fuel economy.

The P6870C’s spacious, comfortable and ergonomically designed operator environment gives the operator a 360° view of the entire paving process, with a direct view into the hopper and auger, and clear sight of the work area. The adjustable seat can be extended beyond the outer edge of the paver for an improved view. The machine features the electronic paver management II (EPM II) system, which guides the operator through working functions with simple, step-by-step instructions, in addition to monitoring fuel consumption. For extended uptime, the EPM II features real-time onboard diagnostics notifications. Menus for engine data and paver functions are shown on a large colour screen. In addition, the EPM II settings manager lets the operator save paving settings and parameters to use on similar paving jobs in the future. For security, the EPM console is protected by a lockable cover and the screed control units can be stored in a lockable compartment.

With three-point balance to stabilize the tractor platform, the P6870C ABG paver’s special hydraulic self-levelling suspension system ensures that traction is maximized and paving remains smooth even on uneven terrain. The Volvo drive system aids accurate  and smooth paving by ensuring high tractive force. The paver comes equipped with a fully independent, no-axle, six-wheel drive system, with the larger rear wheels delivering power, while the four front wheels provide assistance and steer with hydrostatic drive.

In paving jobs, speed and quality are equally important. Volvo’s Variomatic hydraulically extending screeds, which are available with electric or gas heating, are designed to provide a top-quality, smooth and uniform mat. Optional add-on extensions, which are easily attached or removed thanks to Volvo’s hydraulic quick-coupling system, allow paving widths up to 9m. High compaction densities behind the screed produce a smoother, more even mat and greatly reduce the need for subsequent roller compaction.

A larger, 12-tonne capacity hopper further increases paving efficiency, working in conjunction with the conveyor to ensure a consistent mix of materials. A hydraulic front hopper apron helps to empty material into the conveyor system, virtually eliminating overspill. Independent, reversible hydrostatic drives for both bar conveyors and augers ensure the paving material is moved evenly to both sides of the screed. The optimum head of material is maintained in the auger channel by proportional auger speed control, adjustable auger height and the direction of rotation. This larger volume of throughput supports optimum mat quality regardless of width, thickness or paving speed, as well as continuous paving.

The P6870C makes maintenance simple, with improved service access via the large opening compartments on the deck, while the main control unit (MCU) alerts operators to, and keeps track of, any necessary service and maintenance checks. An optional central lubrication system simplifies maintenance even further.
