WRAP grants stimulate recycling capacity in England

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) has signed contracts with four companies confirming capital grant funding to increase England’s production and use of recycled and secondary aggregates. The grants, totalling almost £450,000, have been awarded to Lafarge Aggregates Ltd, Hanson Aggregates UK, Huntsmans Quarries Ltd and RMC Materials Ltd.

The successful proposals submitted by the four companies cover a range of activities including the use of recycled aggregates in the production of asphalt and new plant to process construction, demolition and excavation waste (CD&EW) into recycled and secondary aggregates. In total, the four contracts will deliver an additional 210,000 tonnes of aggregates recycling capacity by 2007 when they reach full capacity.

In one of two contracts involving asphalt production, Lafarge have been awarded £82,000 towards new infrastructure to incorporate recycled aggregates in the production of asphalt at their Stevenage and Ashbury plants, as well as increasing the production of recycled glass at the Ashbury site.

A capital grant of £109,000 to Hanson will see them using RAP (recycled asphalt planings) as a feedstock for semi-continuous asphalt production at their new £3 million plant at Pottal Pool in Staffordshire, which will be capable of producing 240 tonnes of asphalt an hour.

The third award to Huntsmans Quarries Ltd will provide £130,000 towards the construction of a new 38,000-tonne capacity CD&EW recycling facility at the firm’s existing limestone quarry at Naunton, Gloucestershire.

Finally, RMC Materials Ltd have been granted £111,000 towards a mobile impactor to crush CD&EW waste as well as returned concrete, glass and other arisings. The mobile nature of the plant will offer the company maximum flexibility across a number of sites and allow the cost-effective recycling of up to 150,000 tonnes a year.

The impending announcement of three further awards will bring to a conclusion the two capital grant competitions launched by WRAP in 2002. Once all the support agreements have been signed under these two competitions, WRAP’s Aggregates Programme will have allocated capital funding totalling £2.2 million, making a significant contribution to increasing the production and use of recycled and secondary aggregates in the UK. A third capital competition was launched by WRAP in May 2004.
