Woodland management funding available

WOODLAND owner/occupiers in the East of England are now eligible for heavily subsidized woodland management advice through a new Woodfuel East project – a regional initiative administered by the Forestry Commission and supported under the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) by the East of England Development Agency, Defra and the EU.

The project, which has a target to help bring 15,000ha of woodland back into active management by 2013, is principally for unmanaged/undermanaged woodlands but there are also opportunities for managed woodland.

The initiative aims to stimulate the production of an additional 110,000 tonnes of timber per annum, which, as woodfuel, could displace an estimated 75,000 tonnes of C02 emissions.

As approved Woodfuel East contractors, specialist arboreal consultants Lockhart Garratt Ltd (LGL) are offering a day of professional time from £100.00 + VAT, which includes:
  • Site visit (up to half a day) by a professional forester to asses your woodland’s potential and discuss management options
  • High-quality, written report summarizing your woodland’s characteristics, available grant support and its economic potential for timber production and woodfuel opportunities etc
  • All travel and other expenses.
The remaining advisory costs are being met by the East of England Development Agency via the RDPE. The project funding is open to all woodland owners/occupiers in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.

Lockhart Garratt say the benefits to woodland owners/occupiers include:
  • Affordable, bespoke professional advice on your woodland
  • Minimal paperwork - just your signature on the report and data-consent form
  • A summary report to help you to understand your woodland resource and opportunities, and to formulate a woodland management strategy and objectives
  • The report template has been specifically designed by Woodfuel East to capture much of the information required when applying for Forestry Commission English Woodland Grant Scheme or other relevant funding mechanisms
  • Potential for further grant assistance under this project to help implement your objectives.
LGL director Justin Mumford said: ‘This project offers woodland owners or occupiers an easy and affordable way to kick-start or improve their woodland management, helping them to identify other ways of generating income from their tree resource while combating climate change.

‘Effective woodland management results in stronger tree development so that they lock-up more carbon as well as helping them cope with climate change. The trees can also be sold into the woodfuel and timber markets to substitute the use of oil and to take the place of carbon-hungry materials such as steel or concrete.’
