Volvo FH-520 takes on 70-tonne Volvo excavator

A Volvo FH-520, 150-tonne gcw heavy haulage 8x4 tractor unit is being used to move one of Volvo’s largest and heaviest crawler excavators — the 70-tonne EC700BLC. Supplied by Hallett Silbermann, the 8x4 tractor unit is one of the first specialist heavy haulage configuration Volvo’s to go into service in the UK.

Powered by a new 13-litre, six-cylinder D13A diesel engine, the FH-520 represents a massive stride in performance, say Volvo. The model benefits from up to 520hp, better drive ability and a claimed 5% saving in fuel. The new D13A engine is also 20kg lighter than Volvo’s previous D12D engine, and oil change intervals are every 10,000km — or once every year. The FH-520 conforms to both Euro 4 and the future Euro 5 requirements through the attachment of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices to the unit.

Jon Hugill, sales director for Hallett Silbermann, is pleased that the FH-520 has the required power and capacity to distribute the EC7000BLC for their customers.‘We have been associated with Volvo Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment for many years, and have been operating their trucks since the early 1970s.The latest Volvo FH heavy haulage tractor unit provides us with the optimum axle-weights and weight distribution for STGO CAT 3 operation.’

Another road haulage operator to have been impressed with Volvo’s range of trucks is Cambridgeshire-based G.Webb Haulage. The company has taken delivery of a 400hp 8x4 FM tipper that features Volvo’s automated I-Shift gearbox and ‘comfort-trimmed’ sleeper cab.

G.Webb managing director David Webb said: ‘The truck is being used to transport contaminated waste and building materials for customers across the UK. Usually I wouldn’t go for a truck with this much power for the type of work we do, but the excellent I-Shift gearbox means we get the best out of it, and it provides a protective measure against abuse of the vehicle.’

Eddie Drew, a driver for Tarmac, is also pleased with Volvo, particularly with the fuel returns he is getting from his I-Shift equipped Volvo FM12 rigid tipper. ‘This is the third Volvo I’ve had and by far the best yet,’ he enthused. ‘The I-Shift gearbox is amazing — I’m getting 7.5 miles/gal on urban work and anywhere between 8.5 and 9 miles/gal on the motorway — far better than anything I’ve had before.’

The 380hp 8x4 rigid unit has been plated for 32-tonne gvw operation and includes a sleeper cab in comfort-trim, a reverse camera, an integrated telephone and on-board weighing equipment. The unit’s insulated aggregate tipper body was supplied by Shrewsbury-based Bulkrite.

Malcolm Hurst, plant and transport manager for West Midlands-based Coleman & Company, has also been impressed by Volvo. Earlier this year the demolition and recycling company took delivery of five Volvo FM12 eight wheelers to work from their quarry site at Shady Lane in Great Barr, Birmingham.

‘We chose Volvo based on the specification of the trucks, with their high-ground clearance and overall quality,’ said Mr Hurst. ‘Four of the 380hp trucks have been specified with Thompson Loadmaster steel tipper bodies with electric sheeting systems, while the fifth has been supplied with Hyvalift 26-56-S  hook loading equipment. All the vehicles have climate control and reverse cameras with dashboard-mounted pop-up colour monitors for added safety.’
