Volvo A40Es for Banks Mining

BANKS Mining, a division of the Banks Group Ltd of Ferryhill, Co. Durham, have renewed their association with Volvo with the delivery of two A40E coal haulers.

The new trucks, which have been delivered to the company’s Shotton surface mine, near Cramlington – one of the largest approved coal mine sites currently operating in the UK, form part of an upgrade to Banks’ existing fleet.

Fitted with optional bolt-on 850mm side extensions and full tailgates, each truck is capable of hauling a nominal payload of 38 tonnes of coal, contributing to an overall production of up to 15,000 tonnes per week at the Cramlington site.

For added flexibility, the trucks can also be converted back to standard configuration, when needed, for overburden removal and site stripping operations.

The Volvo A40E is equipped with a 471hp, 16-litre, turbocharged, high-performance, low-emission Volvo diesel engine, which develops high torque at low engine speeds and benefits from a nine-speed forward and three-speed reverse transmission.

The machine features all-wheel drive and 100% differential-locks, giving the operator many different driving options. Retardation is achieved through the machine’s service brakes rather than the transmission.

The dump body has a standard load capacity of 39,000kg with an 18.8 cu m heaped SAE 2:1 volume with the full tailgate fitted, but with the optional 850mm side extensions for light materials applications, the heaped body capacity is increased to 42.3 cu m.

In addition to the optional side extensions, the two A40Es supplied to Banks Mining have been fitted with external seat-belt warning beacons, Kidde fire-suppression systems and Volvo ‘CareTrack Advanced’ telematics.
