Trio of Volvos for Grundy & Co Excavations

North West excavation specialist expands fleet with three new Volvo FMX trucks for major recycling operation

GRUNDY & Co Excavations Ltd have taken delivery of three new Volvo FMX eight-wheel tippers, which are currently being used to transport overburden and construction waste to their £1.6 million sand-washing and recycling plant in Widnes, Cheshire.

These latest additions continue Grundy’s long tradition of operating Volvo equipment (supplied by regional dealers Thomas Hardie Commercials) and join an existing fleet of 20 machines, including L220 wheel loaders.

Playing a key role in the smooth running of the company’s demolition and excavation process, the new FMX trucks are fitted with Volvo’s 13-litre, 380hp engines, which provide a torque of 1,900Nm between 1,000 and 1,400 rev/min.

These latest engines are also equipped with SRC technology to meet Euro 5 emission compliance by utilizing AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid. In addition, the FMX tippers are said to be very fuel-efficient thanks to Volvo’s I-Shift automated gearbox.

Kevin Grundy explained: ‘These are our first Volvos with I-Shift. We expect them to have a beneficial effect on the fuel returns as the drivers can concentrate on driving rather than on selecting gears to adjust to the road conditions. The FMX will be a very productive truck on the type of on- and off-road work we undertake.’
