Thompson expand air-operated double diaphragm pump range

Air-operated double diaphragm pump

Manufacturer strengthens its product portfolio with two new FTI pump models

THOMPSON have expanded their range of FTI air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps with the addition of two larger metallic models. Available from Michael Smith Engineers, the new FT30A and FT30S AODD pumps (in stainless steel and aluminium) have a maximum flow rate of 908 litres/min and maximum discharge pressure of 8.3 bar, thanks to a suction and discharge size of 3in x 3in.

The new FTI models have been designed to extend the capabilities of these rugged and reliable pumps and bring the important benefits of using AODD units to a wider range of pumping applications.

According to Michael Smith Engineers, the AODD pumps are simple to install, easy to operate, require less maintenance resulting in lower running costs, and are self-priming and can be dry-run. In addition, they are suited to handling abrasive, viscous and shear-sensitive liquid or ‘dirty’ liquids with particles up to 12mm.

New features of the FT30A and FT30S units include a unique ‘lube-free’ air valve design that contains significantly fewer components compared with other air valves, resulting in reduced service time and associated maintenance costs and downtime.

Among the air valve components are a low friction slide valve on a ceramic plate to allow for long-life and superior sealing and a moulded Buna gasket, which ensures total sealing and eliminates flat gasket tearing. Air is used through a slot in the diaphragm shaft to shift the valve, eliminating the need for a separate pilot valve or mechanically operated pilot valve.

Thompson FTI air pumps are renowned for their installation flexibility. For example, while flooded suction is the most common installation, they can also be utilized in suction lift applications where the pump is installed above the liquid or even submerged in liquids.

In addition, the modular construction of the AODD pumps provides simplified maintenance with individually replaceable, lower-cost wearing parts, which do not require special tools for fitting. The single-piece flow assembly adopted by Thompson means that every pump is built to the highest-quality specification and subject to a three-point test for vacuum, leakage and run ability.
