Tarmac take second Lokotrack 'train'

Tarmac Quarry Products have taken delivery of a second Nordberg Lokotrack mobile crushing 'train'. The three-unit system from the LT range of track-mounted mobile crushers comprises a 59-tonne LT110 primary crusher and two 42-tonne LT1200s for secondary and tertiary duties.

The LT110 is built around a Nordberg C110B jaw crusher, while the secondary LT1200 is equipped with a Nordberg G2612 G-cone crusher. Tarmac have chosen a G1012 Nordberg G-cone crusher for the tertiary role. All three units are powered by Volvo diesel engines rated at 310kW.

The train is currently being commissioned at Tarmac's Hillwood Quarry, near Edinburgh, before moving on to operate across the company's 18 quarries throughout Scotland.

Tarmac's first train was used to provide aggregates for the upgrade of a 15km section of the A74 Glasgow to Carlisle trunk road. From Tarmac's Coatsgate Quarry, near Beattock, the train produced over 400,000 tonnes of aggregate for both asphalt production and as a sub-base material. The success of this programme prompted Tarmac to purchase the second train.

Operator safety was a major factor in Tarmac's specification for the tracked crushers. All three units are radio-controlled by the operator of a Caterpillar 345D LME hydraulic excavator which feeds the LT110. Each unit is started and stopped from the cab and blockages are cleared with a Rammer S27 hammer mounted on the feed hopper of the LT110. The machines are also equipped with a Nordberg crusher automation system that controls conveyor speeds to maintain a consistent choke-feed operation for optimum productivity and product quality.
