Tarmac publish annual sustainability report

TARMAC’s new 2009/10 Sustainability Report has scored an A under the GRI reporting framework. Only the second year in which the company has produced an independent, web-based report of this kind, the A-rating reflects the comprehensive and impressive progress the company has made in delivering on its robust targets and embedding sustainability at the heart of its business.

The GRI rating – effectively a global, independent framework for guiding and measuring best practice sustainability reporting – confirms the strides that Tarmac are making in addressing the key sustainability issues that affect the business, their customers and the wider industries the firm works in and supplies to.

Dr Martyn Kenny, head of sustainability at Tarmac, said: ‘We are extremely proud of this new report. It builds on our achievements in previous years and shows that Tarmac takes sustainability seriously and places it at the core of its business strategy.

‘We understand the breadth and complexity of the many sustainability challenges that face us and our customers, and we are well placed to lead the way in adapting and responding to these changes.’

Some of the key highlights of the sustainability report include: achieving a 41% reduction in carbon emissions per tonne of cement produced; and accomplishing a 87% reduction in the amount of waste Tarmac send to licensed disposal sites.
